We were on the beach at Chinitna Bay with a local bear tour when the driver spotted this brown bear napping as her cubs played nearby. He approached her in our high-wheeled minibus and got close enough to allow me to get this close-up of the awakened bear from the safety of the bus window.Date: 27 June 2022Location: Lake Clark National Park, Alaska, United StatesOriginal resolution: 20 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using DXO Photolab 5 and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 12

We had seen plenty of bison in Theodore Roosevelt National Park during the day, but it wasn't until the golden hour that I found this bull with great light and an excellent profile.Date: 10 August 2018Location: Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota, United StatesOriginal resolution: 20 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6

I drove into the Cataloochee Valley section of Great Smoky Mountains National Park on a rainy afternoon hoping to see willdlfe. It didn't take long to find a small herd of Manitoba Elk. This young bull was hanging around the herd, though a bigger bull seemed to be the alpha male of the herd.Elk were once indigenous to the eastern U.S. but were eventually hunted to extinction. The National Park Service transplanted a herd of Manitoba elk to GSMNP to see if they could be reestablished in the park. Caprock Canyons State Park is home to the Texas State Bison Herd, which is the only remaining herd of Southern Plains Bison (sub-species Bison bison bison) in the United States. The herd descends from that first collected by famed rancher Charles Goodnight. This particular young bull was wandering in the brush along a park road when I snapped him from the window of my car.Date: 16 March 2017Location: Caprock Canyons State Park, Texas, United StatesOriginal resolution: 20 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6

I was driving with the family through Upper Beaver Meadows in Rocky Mountain National Park when I (and about a dozen other people) spotted this bull Rocky Mountain Elk (Cervus canadensis nelsoni) with his harem. It was rutting season, so I set up my tripod on the shoulder of the road a couple hundred feet away. I managed to catch this shot of him bugling while lying next to one of his cows.Date: 26 September 2012Location: Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, United StatesOriginal resolution: 12 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 10

Let's face it. Humans love to project emotions on certain animals. I don't know if the left-hand prairie dog is grooming or feeding the right-hand prairie dog, but it sure looks like love to me.Date: 7 August 2018Location: Custer State Park, South Dakota, United StatesOriginal resolution: 20 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6

I caught this black-footed prairie dog chomping down on a piece of grass, not far from a herd of bison.
