I knew I wanted to photograph this schoolhouse-style lighthouse at the end of the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal on my trip to Door County. Luck was with me when I realized that the sky would be clear and moonrise of the full moon would be at dusk on Otcober 8th. I lined up this shot from the beach at Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Nature Preserve. The galactic core of the Milky Way doesn't rise until about 4:00 a.m. in southern Florida in mid-March. This was my third attempt over the last four years to get a good composition of the lighthouse on Sanibel Island and the Milky Way. I wanted to photograph sunrise at Sanibel Island Light (also known as Point Ybel Light), and I got there about the time the golden hour began. I like this wide-angle shot of the light because of the expanse of beach, reflection of the dawn in the waterline, and the texture of the altocumulus clouds. We were racing the clock to get to Saugerties Light before sundown, having spent the afternoon at the Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park. When we got there, we still had to hike the half-mile trail to the light. I took a bus out to the Seltjarnarnes Peninsula, at the northwest corner of Reykjavik, and walked out to Grótta Island to photograph the lighthouse. I had brought only a 20-mm lens with me, which brought some interesting composition challenges.
