The Whitman County Growers elevator and the town of Steptoe are iconic in photographs of the agricultural region of eastern Washington called the Palouse. At sunset, the shadows created by the rolling loess hills of wheat create a tremendous range of contrasts. Many photographers have captued this scene over the years from a perch on nearby Steptoe Butte, which rises about 1,200 ft above the surrounding land. Now you can add mine to the pile.Date: 22 May 2019Location: Steptoe, Washington, United StatesOriginal resolution: 36 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 8
I took this photo from Steptoe Butte about 30 minutes after sunrise. The golden light on the fields really makes this photo.Date: 23 May 2019Location: Steptoe Butte State Park, Washington, United StatesOriginal resolution: 36 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 8
I think the undulating land of the Palouse, when the wheat is green, looks a giant's golf course. I liked this image, in particular, because the lat afternoon light brings out the cultivation patterns.Date: 22 May 2019Location: Steptoe Butte State Park, Washington, United StatesOriginal resolution: 36 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 8

I was driving from Austwell to Rockport when I came across this recently planted field where the crops (probably sorghum) had already sprouted. I tried to find the spot where the thin green lines converged on the old barn, about a kilometer across the field.Date: 19 March 2018Location: Refugio County, Texas, United StatesOriginal resolution: 36 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6

I saw this little red granary peaking over a field of wheat and new it would make a nice photo. The granary sits at Flansburg Farms, off State Highway 27, southwest of the town of Palouse.Date: 24 May 2019Location: Whitman County, Washington, United StatesOriginal resolution: 36 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 8
I spotted this derelict barn off U.S. Highway 195 between Pullman and Colfax. I liked the contrast of the afternoon light on the barn and foreground and the shadows on the wheat behind the barn.Date: 22 May 2019Location: Whitman County, Washington, United StatesOriginal resolution: 36 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 8
The winding stream running through the Palouse farmland gives the undulating hills the look of a three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle.Date: 22 May 2019Location: Steptoe Butte State Park, Washington, United StatesOriginal resolution: 36 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 9
I got up at 3:45 a.m. for this shot from Steptoe Butte, just after 5:00 a.m. The early morning wind was blowing hard, and I struggled to keep the camera steady. As you can see, I did manage to take a photo that I liked.Date: 23 May 2019Location: Steptoe Butte State Park, Washington, United StatesOriginal resolution: 36 MPProcessing: Processed in high dynamic range from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 8

The Eriksen Barn is often photographed. I had a hard time finding an angle this particular day that put a lot of the farm equipment near the barn out of the frame. I like this particular composition because it brings in the purple-bloom shrubs on the right and frames the barn with the tree on the left and the trees on the right.Date: 23 May 2019Location: Saint John, Washington, United StatesOriginal resolution: 36 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 9
The Palouse Knot Barn is now a wedding venue, but when I took this photo, I think the barn was still known as the Heidenreich Dairy Barn. That was certainly the name I saw when I was scouting the area. Regardless, it is a well-known barn in the Palouse and has won awards for its restoration.I took a different angle for this shot than most people, who shoot from the Highway 272. I parked instead on Chicken Ranch Road and photographed across the field with a longer lens.Date: 23 May 2019Location: Colfax, Washington, United StatesOriginal resolution: 36 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 9
This fence welded from various wheels lines the property of the Artisans at the Dahmen Barn. Processing the image in black and white brings out the texture of the scale on the bare metal. I had to play with the composition until I found this angle that takes the eye from right to left.Date: 24 May 2019Location: Uniontown, Washington, United StatesOriginal resolution: 36 MPProcessing: Processed from RAW using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 8
