I was photographing Öxarárfoss in Þingvellir National Park when the sun came out, highlighting the rocks from the left. The autumn sun in Iceland sits low on the horizon, providing a pleasing light most of the day. Whitewater Falls is the tallest falls in the Eastern U.S. We had been here just a few months before when the water flow was much lower. Faxafoss is a long fall of modest height on the Tungufljót River. I was able to walk up to the edge of the falls and shoot along their length. I liked this angle best. The sun provides some directional lighting from the upper left. I photographed Dry Falls a little more than nineteen years before this photo, though in the morning. The dynamic range of this digital photo is dramatically better than that of the Fujichrome Velvia photo, but I do wish I had gotten to the falls earlier to get the morning light on the falls. Seljalandsfoss is an almost 200-ft waterfall that flows off the glacier-covered volcano Eyjafjallajökull, which famously erupted in 2010, bringing air traffic in Europe to a halt. The spray from the falls is tremendous (and cold), so taking a photo here requires constant attention to keeping the camera lens dry. Gulfoss is a famous set of falls on the glacier-fed Ölfusá River. The falls are one of the key stops of the Golden Circle tour of Iceland. Rocky Gorge, which sits off the Kancamagus Highway, is photographed by most travelers on the Kanc since access is so easy, but it brings a number of challenges to taking a good photograph. Since the falls sit in the shade, bringing in the fall color in the distance requires use of a graduated neutral density filter to keep from blowing out that part of the image. Second Falls lies on Yellowstone Prong and sits in the valley just below the Graveyard Fields overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Hanging Lake is a popular hiking destination east of Glenwood Springs. It's so popular, in fact, that the U.S. Forest Service manages access by timed tickets for shuttle buses to and from Glenwood Canyon.The hike up is a challenging vertical climb of about 1,000 ft in one mile of trail. The trail is also quite rocky and crossed with tree roots. More than a few people are injured each year on the trail.Hanging Lake is noted for its pristine beauty, though visually, it's a bit busy to my eye. Finding a pleasing composition was a challenge. I first visited Silver Run Falls in 2002, when it was a somewhat unknown fall. It was peaceful to view, and I had the falls mostly to myself. That was back in the film days, of course. | Now, the falls are well known and a favorite of families because the plunge pool at the base makes a nice swimming hole and the falls themselves are gentle enough not to pose a hazard. Consequently, I needed a lot of patience to get this photo without swimmers in it.
